Biographical Notes:

Thought to have died of coronary thrombosis at Tauranga Hospital.* He had previously been diagnosed with coronary artery disease and hypertension when medically examined in 1941, and was struck off the strength of 2 NZEF as medically unfit on 16 May 1941. Although he was downgraded from Medical Grade I to Medical Grade III he remained in service as a draughtsman/artist with the Hygiene Section, where he was promoted to Warrant Officer. In November 1941 his application to transfer to 4 Field Hygiene Section, stationed in the Middle East, was declined, and he was classified as medically unfit for any overseas service. On 21 December, 1942 he was appointed Regimental Sergeant Major, Marton Battalion, Home Guard. There is an entry in his service record, dated 27 August 1945, noting his discharge as “Medically Unfit”.
