Biographical Notes:

“DIED IN P.O.W. CAMP PTE. D. RUSSELL After being reported missing in October or November, 1941, nothing further was heard by the next-of-kin of Private Daniel Russell, of Cambridge, until a few days ago, when his mother, Mrs M. Russell, of Wilson Street, Cambridge, was officially notified that her son had died in a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany, in November, 1941. It would appear that only when records of this German POW camp fell into Allied hands, was it learned what had happened to Pte. Russell. He was Mrs Russell’s fifth son and he went overseas with the 5th. Reinforcements. Prior to going on active service he was farming in North Auckland. Mrs Russell lost three sons in the previous war.” [Note NZWGT - of the "three sons lost", as mentioned in this story, only one can be identified, namely Thomas Russell.]  [Waikato Independent, Volume XLIV, Issue 1178, 10 September 1945, Page 2]
