Biographical Notes:

“SUDDEN DEATH AT SEA. SERGEANT B. W. LEGG. The death occurred at sea last month of Senior-Sergeant Bertram Willoughby Legg, the only son of Mr and Mrs W Legg, of Pahiatua and brother of Mrs S. E. Warner, of Hamua. The late soldier was 27 years of age. and he was of an athletic build. He was born at Wellington, educated at one of the City schools, and Wellington College. He afterwards was attached to the firms of Briscoe, McNeil and Co. and Duthie and Co. in that city. He left the latter to join the original force despatched from New Zealand to Samoa, being at Samoa for about nine months, returning to the Dominion, subsequently joined the 14th Reinforcements, which left New Zealand towards the end of June last. Chaplain Cruickshank, in a letter which the parents received yesterday, stated deceased had been suffering from measles, but was convalescent and able to get out of bed. He, however, took a turn for the worse on Saturday, July 15th and developed a convulsion at 4 p.m., and died a quarter of an hour later. He was buried on the Sunday morning. A letter signed by fellow N.C.O.’s of deceased, received by Mr and Mrs Legg, stated he was sea sick most of the voyage to the first port of call, when he was placed in an isolation hospital with an attack of measles. He was reported to be progressing favourably, and they were not made aware of his serious condition, none of them being with him when he died. Deceased was accorded full military honours at sea. His cabin mates acted as pall-bearers. The Union Jack covered the body as two comrades stood on guard an hour before the burial. The ship slowed down while the service was read, and the buglers sounded the Last Post. His fellow-comrades and Chaplain Cruickshank paying a very high tribute to the excellent qualities of deceased. Widespread sympathy will he extended to the above families in their sorrow.” [Signaller Thos. Reginald Bacon is the other casualty referred to in this article.]  [Pahiatua Herald, Volume XXI, Issue 5522, 30 August 1916, Page 4]
