I sent this story earlier [previous story has been deleted - NZWGT], but have found a few facts since of interest to family historians and misread part of the original newspaper article as a result o...f poor reproduction. I found another copy from the ODT which is much clearer. Story starts here BELWORTHY, Arthur Eton (1894-1915). Born in Boort, Victoria, Australia on the 11th of December, 1894, he was the youngest son of Thomas (Tom) and Bessie Belworthy of Invercargill, who had married in Australia in 1889. His father, Thomas (b.1860), was listed as a farrier when he emigrated to Otago, New Zealand, from his home of Eton in Buckinghamshire, England. He was the second oldest of four adventurous young brothers who all travelled out together on the ship "Wellington" in 1883 - William, Thomas, Charles and Arthur. Possibly tempted by the Victorian gold rushes of the 1880s and ‘90s, Thomas then moved to Australia. He later returned with his family to New Zealand and settled in Invercargill when Arthur was a boy. Arthur joined the Otago Infantry Battalion, N.Z.E.F., in February, 1915. He was fatally wounded at Gallipoli and died in hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, 18 August, 1915. His cousin, William Arthur Belworthy, was also killed during the campaign on Gallipoli. He died 28 August, 1915, and his name is recorded on a commemorative brass plaque at St James Anglican Church, Ngatimoti, Tasman, New Zealand. William Arthur was the eldest son of Arthur Eton Belworthy’s Uncle William, oldest of the Belworthy brothers. The following article is taken from the "Otago Daily Times", 27 August, 1915. Sergeant-Major Belworthy has received word that his son, Private Arthur Eton Belworthy, had succumbed to his wounds. On Monday the information came to hand that Private Belworthy had been wounded in the abdomen. The deceased soldier was born in Victoria, Australia. He came to Invercargill as a boy and was educated at the Central School there. After leaving school he was in the employ of Messrs. P. McSkimming and Son. and Messrs. Herbert Haynes and Co. He was a keen worker in the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Private Belworthy left Wellington on June 12 as a private in the Fifth Reinforcements. He was in his twentieth year, and was extremely popular with all with whom be was brought into contact. Sergeant-Major Belworthy, who is in charge of the patients of the Waikari Military Hospital (a sanatorium for soldiers with infectious diseases), was waited on last night by the soldiers isolated there for the purpose of expressing their deepest sympathy with him and Mrs. Belworthy in the loss they had sustained.
