“A painfully sudden death, that of Sergeant Andrew Fleming, took place at. East Gore shortly before noon to-day. The late Sergeant Fleming joined up with the 21st reinforcements, and after active service in France and after being wounded returned to the Dominion last April. The deceased had been managing his brother's (recently killed in action) farm at Balfour, and about a fortnight ago took ill with influenza from which he developed a slight attack of pleurisy, but improved and was able to get about. Unfortunately a relapse occurred and last Thursday he was removed to the Gore temporary hospital. He so far recovered in that institution that he was able to leave yesterday, and was the guest of Mr and Mrs Walter Gee, East Gore. Deceased was able to be out of bed for an hour or so yesterday, and this morning felt so well that he expressed his joy and delight at his improvement. He made an attempt to get out of bed for lunch, but found the effort too much and suddenly passed away from heart failure. Deceased who was 24 years of age. leaves a brother, T. A. Fleming (Waikaka), and three sisters, Mrs J. T. Martin (Wellington!, Mrs Gilkison (Pine Bush), and Miss Nellie Fleming (Invercargill).” [Mataura Ensign, 26 November 1918, Page 5]
