Biographical Notes:

New Zealand Lightweight Boxing champion in 1911 and 1912, Ponsonby’s Private Alf Gault served with the Auckland Regiment at Gallipoli. Some of that time as a runner with the HQ staff and reportedly wounded by shrapnel in May 1915. Evacuated to the Western Front, he was fatally wounded at the Somme in October 1916, after volunteering for front line duty. Interred in Thistle Dump Cemetery, Longueval. He was posthumoustly awarded the Gold Medal of Serbia, for bravery and services to that country while serving at Gallipoli. The award was collected by his father at a ceremony held at the Auckland Town Hall on the 16th August 1917.
