Biographical Notes:

" Sgt. A. E. Hedges (died of wounds) was at the time of enlisting, diocesan secretary in Nelson, succeeding the late Mr. E. I. Kingsley. Prior to that he was in the Public Works Department. He was one of the principal workers in the National Reserve, and being granted leave of absence by the Church authorities, eventually enlisted with the 26th reinforcements, going into camp in July 1916. Sgt. Hedges served in the Boer War. His wife lives with her father at Taihape."
