Biographical Notes:

"When he was struck by a northbound Matamata race train at Ngaruawahia on Saturday, a soldier at the Hopuhopu military camp was killed instantly. He was Gunner Alexander Fortescue, Pearce, aged 24, a member of the Fifth Field Battery, New Zealand Artillery. No one saw the accident, but the train crew felt a bump when passing the Hopuhopu siding. The train was stopped, and an investigation showed that a soldier had been run over.

Gunner Pearce was a single man, and had entered camp on the day before.
