Biographical Notes:

The death in 1917 was that of 12/3521, Pte Albert John Yaag, 2 Battalion Auckland Regiment who was born on 25 February 1893 in Liverpool, England. He was a Pork Butcher living in Auckland and single when he attested into the 8th Reinforcements at Trentham on 24 August 1915. He left NZ on 13 November 1915 arriving in Suez on 20 December and he joined his battalion on 9 March 1916. He left for France on 8 April 1916 arriving on an unknown date and he was appointed Company Cook on 1 May, a post he relinquished on 1 August. He was wounded on 15 September during the Battle of the Somme suffering a gunshot wound to his spine and he was admitted to 15 Corps Main Dressing Station. He was moved to No 1 Canadian General Hospital at Etaples being admitted on 17 September. He left for the UK on 19 September being admitted to Walton on Thames hospital the same day. He died of his wounds on 23 February 1917 and was buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery on 24 February.  [Graham Grist Feb 2021}
