Biographical Notes:

"It is feared that the SERGEANT A. WALLACE, of the British section of the New Zealand Engineers on active service, who is reported to have died of wounds, is Alan Wallace, the brilliant young Aucklander who was the Rhodes Scholar for 1912. Mr Alan Wallace was the son of Mr George Wallace, manager of the gasworks at Devonport. He was born in Auckland and was educated at the Ponsonby School, the Auckland Grammar School, and the Auckland University College. He graduated in 1910, after an exceptionally brilliant scholastic career, gaining in that year the senior scholarships in mathematics, applied mathematics and chemistry. His athletic record was also an excellent one, and he was not only a member of the University Cricket Club, but represented Auckland in 1910-11 in interprovincial matches. He was also a member of the senior eleven of the North Shore Association football club. When he went to Oxford, Alan Wallace entered at Balliol College, and last year he graduated with first class honours in mathematics. He was also a member of the first eleven. He was staying on for a third year at Oxford, and had intended to read up honours in education, but at the outbreak of war he enlisted in the New Zealand contingent that was mobilised at Home." [Auckland Star, Volume XLVI, Issue 118, 19 May 1915, Page 5]

"ALAN WALLACE, born in 1891, son of George Wallace of Auckland, New Zealand, came to Balliol as a Rhodes Scholar in 1912.  He had had a distinguished career at Auckland University College, and like so many of his country men was a fine mathematician. He read mathematics at Balliol, and would certainly have continued his Auckland successes. He was a good athlete, well built and of good physique, with a natural aptitude for games.  He played for the College both at Association and Rugby football and at cricket, and he played in the Freshmen's Cricket Match of 1913. Quiet and unassuming, he quickly found friends in College, who valued his simple, unspoilt nature, and the vigour with which he threw himself in to any task or game. When the war came he enlisted in the New Zealand Engineers, where his technical knowledge could be of service, and at the time of the landing of the New Zealand Division at Anzac (April 25, 1915) he had the rank of Sergeant.  He had only been a fortnight on shore when he was wounded in the head and shoulder by shrapnel, and died three days later without regaining consciousness. But in that brief space he had proved himself as a soldier and fulfilled the high hopes his friends had for him. His Commanding Officer wrote of him - "I should like to write a line to express the deep regret of myself and of all the officers and men of the N.Z. Engineers at the death of Sergt. Wallace. It may be some consolation, and at any rate a matter of pride, to know that he had done the most excellent work, and shown the greatest gallantry ever since his arrival at the Front. His name is being forwarded to the General Commanding the Division, as one of the N.C.O.s who did especially good work during  the arduous fortnight we have had on shore.  He died a soldier's death on duty.""
