Coastal Gunner Believed Drowned

While walking round a ledge on the cliff on the seaward side of Taiaroa Head yesterday morning, Gunner Alan George Malaquin, aged 21, a member of a coastal defence unit, slipped and fell into the sea. A fair sea was running, and although Gunner Malaquin clung to seaweed for some time, a companion was unable to reach him. Assistance was summoned, but before a rescue party could arrive at the spot the gunner had disappeared. Up to a late hour last night there had been no sign of the body. His parents reside in Christchurch.
