Otago Provincial Memorial

Dunedin City

Location Information:

The Otago Provincial Memorial is situated in Dunedin (Anderson's Bay) Cemetery on Tomahawk Road, and lies on rising ground on the edge of the bay on the small strip of land between Otago Harbour and the ocean. Commemorated on the memorial are 31 Commonwealth soldiers of the Provincial District of Otago, buried at sea between New Zealand and Overseas Bases in the years 1914-1919, and 3 Commonwealth airmen of the 1939-1945 War who have no known grave. The memorial is in the form of a flat tapered granite-faced concrete screen wall mounted on two pedestals and it stands behind a flagstaff on a paved area enclosed by low side walls. Affixed to the face are four bronze panels; the names of those commemorated are engraved on three of these panels and the other one bears the following inscription: 1914 - 1918 ON THESE PANELS ARE THE NAMES OF THOSE MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES WHO ENLISTED IN THIS DISTRICT WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY IN AND AROUND NEW ZEALAND OR EN ROUTE TO OVERSEAS SERVICE AND TO WHOM THE FORTUNES OF WAR DENIED A KNOWN AND HONOURED GRAVE. 1939 - 1945
