Jack Plummer grew up in Wellington, where his parents owned The Kiosk at the top of the Kelburn cablecar, and then a bakery and grocery in Wadestown Rd, Wadestown. He had three older sisters and two ...younger brothers. He attended Wadestown Primary School and Wellington College, played tennis at the Wadestown tennis club, and worked for what was then known as the Tax Department (Inland Revenue). He volunteered to join the Air Force, and spent two years as an instructor in Canada before being posted to England. He was involved in many of the bombing runs over Germany towards the end of the war, and was one of the first to use radar. He received an immediate Distinguished Flying Cross for an incident in which his Lancaster bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Part of the front was blown away, leaving him exposed, but he flew the plane back to England safely. When he died, after being shot down over Munster, he was on his 30th sortie.
