Biographical Notes:

. The Manawatu newspaper carried this:
"We regret to report the death of Trooper E B Oliver, youngest son of Mr.and Mrs. W Oliver of Woodville, who has been accidentally killed in Egypt. His parents have received the following telegram from the Minister of Defence :- "Regret to advise you cable received this day (April 28) reports that 12635 E B Oliver was accidentally killed on April 25th, over-run by limber. Accept my sincerest sympathy in the loss which you and New Zealand have suffered." Very great sympathy will be felt by the people of Woodville for the parents of the unfortunate young man, who was greatly liked here. He had been away over three years.

Ernest had enlisted in December 1915, Sailed to Suez on the Mokoia and served all his time in Egypt. He was sick a couple of times, spending time in hospital at Al Arish with Enteritis and in Kantara with Diarrhoea. He was killed at Kuesna ( Quweisna) some 60k north of Cairo and is buried at Cairo War Memorial Cemetery

In 1940, the RSA returned his Victory Medal to the Ministry of Defence, who investigated, trying to locate his mother. Records don't show why the RSA had the medal or the outcome. (nzwargraves.org)
